St Helens Central railway station represents one of the busier stations on the Liverpool to Wigan Line from Liverpool Lime Street to Wigan North Western and beyond. Its name was changed from St Helens Shaw Street to St Helens Central in 1987.
LMR successfully designed and installed the Tecu Oxid (weathered copper) cladding to the two main feature fins and platform bridge, including the full sub frame and insulation, all secured to the main steel work.
Longworth designed the copper shingles which were set to a 70 degree angle, in order to provide the Architect aesthetical brief. The copper was chosen because it is both extremely resilient and sustainable having an extremely long life, even in such an aggressive environment.
The craftsmanship of the copper work on this project, was commended in the 2007 “Copper in Architecture” awards, presented at the RIBA offices in London, with the Judges considering it an “…accomplished example of great accuracy in setting out and installation”.
The entrance of the station makes it an iconic feature of the areas up and coming redevelopment programme with its twin copper clad fins, and Longworth remain proud to have been involved in its creation.
